NOAH'S ARK CHILDREN'S VENTURE

Who or what is a 'macaroni'?

A Macaroni is, or more correctly was, an 18th century dandy or yuppie of his day. Young wealthy men copied or imitated the Italian style of fashion with very fancy clothes, high white wigs, were known as Macaroni’s and even had their own club in London. From London they traveled to Cheltenham each season for the racing and stopped at Bibury (a small village near Macaroni Wood) where they stayed at Paul’s Castle and went to Bibury racecourse. A look at on Ordnance Survey map of the area shows where Bibury racecourse, now disused, once was and in the immediate area there is a Macaroni Downs, a Macaroni Farm and of course Macaroni Wood.

Another suggestion for the origin of the name from a local historian is that the place name Macaroni refers to a famous racehorse of the 18th or 19th century that was stabled at Aldsworth, another local village.
